What you need to know

We understand that studying in Sweden as an international student comes with many practical challenges. Opening a Swedish bank account is one of the first important steps to make your daily life easier.

But before opening a Swedish bank account, it's worth taking a moment to think about whether you really need one. Therefor, we'd like to ask you to think about

  • how long you'll be here
  • how you'll manage your finances
  • whether your domestic bank account could be sufficient for your needs.

It's worth weighing the effort against the actual benefits for your situation.

For studies shorter than 12 months

If your studies are shorter than 12 months, we generally recommend using your home country bank card and account.

However, if you need a Swedish bank account, you can open one with us using a coordination number (samordningsnummer) or a temporary customer number.

To get a coordination number, you need to contact Skatteverket, the Swedish tax agency .

For studies longer than 12 months

If you're planning to study in Sweden for more than a year, we recommend that you do it in this order:

  1. Apply for a Swedish personal number (personnummer) at Skatteverket, the Swedish tax agency.
  2. Get a Swedish ID card to use for identification.
  3. Contact us to open your account by fill in our contact form.

One of our advisors will call you to book a meeting to help you get started.

Student offer for Nordic Nordea customers

If you're already a Nordea customer in Finland, Norway, or Denmark, you can access our student offer while studying in Sweden. This means that you can get Vardagspaketet free of charge (regular price SEK 45/month).

Important to know

Since CSN payments are not applicable for international students, your student account will automatically be deregistered after 9 months. You will receive a letter before this happens. If you're studying for longer than 9 months, you'll need to re-register as a student customer after the deregistration has taken effect.

How to get started

1. Get in touch with us

As an international student, you most likely don't have a Swedish personal identity number yet. This means you can't use Mobile BankID to identify yourself.

To get started, please fill in our contact form and one of our advisors will call you to book a meeting.

Please note that you must be at least 18 years old to apply.

2. Proof of your student status
